Interesting Quote on the Alleged Origins of the Davao Death Squad

In a post election note where I critiqued the popular impression of Davao’s supposed success, [seeExtrajudicial Killing: Davao’s Peace Chimera; What Happens When High Expectations Meet Reality? (May 29)], I theorised on the operating mechanism behind “Davao’s death squads” or “vigilantes”

**Yet just who comprises the death squads or vigilantes? Are they government delegated or outsourced jobs to non-government entities (mercenaries or hired assassins or the NPAs)?

The following excerpt is based on a testimony of an alleged whistleblower on Davao’s death squad at the latest Senate hearings on extrajudicial killings. From GMA/MSN

He said he was initially part of the seven-man Lambada Boys liquidation team which was formed in 1988.

He said he was a former member of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Units (CAFGU) who was taken to be part of the group.

“Noong 1993 dumami na kami. Kasama na ang rebel returnees pati pulis,” he said. [includes rebel returnees and police--english translation on the second sentence mine]

He said the group was later known as the Davao Death Squad

Truly interesting developments unfolding at a very rapid clip.

All actions have consequences.
